Relate Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy


Couple Counselling Scotland is offering the Relate Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy.  Applicants will be accredited couple counsellors or have an equivalent couple counselling training from Relate or Marriage Care, or a diploma in counselling or an appropriate professional qualification.  All applicants must have access to a client base.  The students on the course usually include experienced  couple counsellors and health professionals working in a variety of settings.


Aims of the Course

This course takes a minimum of two years to complete and will offer a training in psychosexual therapy.  The training has been informed by 20 years of continuous research and analysis of casework. Students will have the opportunity to extend their understanding of a cognitive/behavioural approach

 

Course Objective

4   To develop understanding of psychosexual problems and the causation, assessment and treatment of these problems

Students will have the opportunity to extend their understanding of a cognitive/behavioural approach to the treatment of sexual difficulties and develop the skills to apply this to practice.  Specific treatments for dysfunctions for males and females will be addressed.  Bio-psychosocial causes of sexual dysfunction are explored.  Work with clients who have experience of sexual abuse, gender and sexual identity confusion, and work with issues of sexual orientation cultural difference will be addressed.  As will the relationship between sexuality and the aging process.

Course Content
The course runs over a two year period and has seven inter-dependent elements:-

4    Five modules of residential training over a 12 month period
       (3 x 48 hours, 2 x 72 hours) which will be held within the central belt in Scotland.

4   Observation of experienced therapists.

4    Continuing psychosexual therapy with clients.

4    Individual psychosexual therapy supervision.

4    Group psychosexual therapy supervision.

4    Directed reading and private study.

4    Written assignments as follows:

      (a)    Log of casework and supervision

      (b)    Case studies

      (c)    Multi-choice questionnaire

      (d)    3,000 word essay

Supervision Commitment
Students are expected to offer a minimum of three hours client contact per week.  Supervision should be negotiated with your local service manager at the rate of one hour individual supervision and one and a half hours of group supervision per month, and is usually offered by a BASRT recognised supervisor.

Subject to satisfactory training reports, students will begin therapy with patients after Module II of the training.  The cost of supervision is not included in the course fee.

Criteria for Awarding the Diploma

The award of the Diploma is subject to:-

4  satisfactory completion of the five training modules, and all written assignments

4  appropriate maintenance of case notes and research records

4  satisfactory reports from trainers and supervisors.

4  satisfactory attendance at, and participation in, SRT individual and SRT group supervision

4  Delivering 200 hours therapy and taking at least six cases to completion of treatment

4  Final assessment process

Acceptance on to the Course
Acceptance onto the course will be a two stage process:

4 Returning the completed application form accompanied by evidence of a professional qualification or couple counselling accreditation

4 Attendance at a one day selection seminar, which will take the form of a group discussion and a personal interview, and will be held within CCS offices.

Fees
4  £5,000 for external candidates

Codes of Ethics and Practice
This course if validated by the British Association of Sexual and Relationship Therapy (BASRT).  Couple Counselling Scotland abides by the BASRT Code of Ethics and Practice in the area of Sex and Relationship Therapy practice and training therefore all applicants are required to be student members of BASRT.
