Diploma in Casework Supervision

Couple Counselling Scotland has developed a generic supervision diploma with specialised modules on the supervision of couple counsellors and groups.  Now in its second year, the diploma is offered to both internal and external candidates.  Candidates from our own member services and similar services such as Relate, will need to be accredited couple counsellors, with two years post-accreditation experience.  Other candidates will need to be qualified to diploma level or equivalent, have 450 hours of supervised counselling practice, and be able to demonstrate experience of counselling couples.  The diploma consists of six weekend modules and 27 hours of supervised practice.

The course is validated by the UK Awarding Body Consortium, chosen because the framework it offers ensures that we meet the criteria of a 'substantial, structured course', required by BACP for individual supervisor accreditation.

The course consists of six weekend modules (Saturday and Sunday), spread over ten months.  There are three generic supervision modules, one organisational, one group supervision, and one specifically on the supervision of couple counsellors.

The weekends are scheduled from September 2005 to June 2006, generally on alternate months.  They will be held in our premises in Edinburgh.

All participants will be expected to have two supervisees, provided by their local service or agency.  External candidates need to ensure that at least one is a couple counsellor.  They will supervise them for one and a half hours every month, under supervision from ''recognised' supervisors, for the duration of the course.  They will also need to be a member of a case discussion group.  Supervision placements will begin after the first module.

There will be five assessed pieces of work: one essay, two tapes (group and individual supervision  sessions), a seminar report and a portfolio.

Aims of the course:

4    To foster the growth of open, self-aware, flexible supervisors, with a clear sense of the professional boundaries and responsibilities of their role.

4   To provide a supportive learning environment where students can develop the skills of case work supervision, with particular reference to couple counsellors and groups

4    To provide a thorough knowledge of the supervision models available so that students can choose the model which best suits their own supervisory style and practice.

Cost

£2,200 for students sponsored by a service external to CCS and £1,590 for students sponsored by a local couple counselling service.  Accommodation is included in the cost, but not travel.

Supervision costs (5-6 hours) are not included and will need to be met by individual applicants or their local services/agencies.
