Counselling and Health, Advanced Counselling Studies

 

Couple Counselling Scotland has developed a course which offers counsellors, health professionals and others working within the helping profession, the opportunity to explore the interface between counselling and health. Issues of practice, culture and  organisational context, will be explored. The impact on counselling of a range of health problems and mental health issues will be analysed and discussed from both perspectives.

The course consists of six weekend modules (Saturday and Sunday), spread over twelve months January 2005 to January 2006.  They will be held in our premises in Edinburgh.

The course is academically credit rated by Napier University at 15 Credits SCQF level 9.

CCS Accredited Counsellors from member services who have already achieved the Advanced Certificate in Couple Counselling will receive a Diploma in Couple Counselling on successful completion of this module all components of the course.  The module consists of six taught weekend modules (75 hours) and 75 hours of directed personal study.

Aims of the course

4    To encourage a critical understanding of the interface between counselling and health

4    To promote knowledge and understanding of how health problems can impinge on the couple relationship

4    To explore counsellors’ and health professionals’ roles within these concepts

Indicative Content
The role of the counsellor in health settings; the use of counselling skills in health settings; the impact of chronic and acute health problems; addictions and substance abuse; the bio-psychosocial impact of problems on individuals and couples; coping mechanisms, adaptation and change; professional referral and liaison issues; counselling practice and evaluation; ethical issues; current research; personal development opportunities.

Learning Methods
A personal learning plan, group discussions, reading, analysis of research, personal reflection, peer and tutor feedback, role play, video and analysis of practice

Assessment
A poster presentation to the learning group on a relevant topic, a paper based on the presentation

Course attendance: 80%

Cost
£2,000 for external candidates
£1,590 for internal candidates

Accommodation and travel costs are not included.
